Overview of the Island

The area known as Tenerife is a vastly popular tourist destination off the coast of Africa. It has a well developed tourist network and lots of facilities catering to all types of budgets and tastes. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, you should head to Puerto de la Cruz. This is a special city, second in size in Tenerife, and is more charming and relaxing than the large tourist resorts elsewhere on the islands. Here you’ll find a great number of hotels from which to choose.

Puerto de la Cruz

The city benefits from a lot of greenery and has a lovely atmosphere which locals and tourists alike enjoy. As in many Spanish towns and cities, the boulevards of Puerto de la Cruz come alive at night as people stroll along the promenade by the Plaza del Charco. The city boasts wonderful restaurants with outdoor terraces on which you can sit, enjoy a good meal and smell the fresh air, and there’s also a wonderful old marina which is used to this day by local fishermen. The city itself is a point of interest for those looking to find out about local history and you should visit the Castillo de San Felipe and the Church of Nuestra Senora to gain some local knowledge.

For a good afternoon you should head to the Martianez Lake, a connection of salt water pools from the sea where you can relax in the good weather. Of course, the island is famous for its black sand from the volcano, and you can find beaches in the vicinity of Puerto de la Cruz with such sand (try Playa Jardin for example) There’s also a nice botanical garden with a good selection of flora and fauna towards the city’s edge, and if you like birds (including parrots) and plants you should head to the gardens at Loro.

Combine with a trip to Barcelona

Many like to combine a trip to Tenerife with a short stop in Barcelona which will give you the chance to have a week by the sea in Tenerife followed by a shopping break in the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona. The city is known for its nightlife, great restaurants and wonderful atmosphere. There is also a wealth of cultural activities, parks and monuments to see. Make sure to visit the Sagrada familia and the Park Guell which were designed by Gaudi.
